My World

I dwell in the belly of the beast amongst trees I cant see through
the fog is heavy and the smoke is lethal
The river is 100 proof and my soul is drowning
my old earth is wailing; kidneys failing
Illumination can be scary
The answers aren't evident nor are they a new president
The ultimate final destination...peep the occupation
Food for the soul ,but in this jungle it's cold
Friends shake hands over fist that clinch
33 degrees breed gorillas in the midst
48 laws govern the work place
That is life in the never ending rat race
1000 friends I know but I never knew, facebook and myspace the new pimps on the avenue
Positive Progression was the catalyst for all the aggression
Opposites attract like big wheels on cadillacs
3rd eye is blinded to the fact
The beast is my world...

the church of oprah WTF?

In recent months, Oprah Winfrey has gone from being merely a quintessential billionaire to outright elevating herself to the level of American deity.
Free your mind do the knowledge...

Been seeing allot of this on the net lately.

Grilchy interview...

Guilty Party COMING SOON!!!!!!!

MarQ Spekt is down to keep it “grilchy” -- as the rapper explains it, “that's 'grimy' and 'filthy' combined.” Spekt has found a like-minded partner in Brooklyn MC Karniege, and the two have paired as the Invizzibl Men. Their debut release, The Unveiling, is due out August 19 on underground stalwart Backwoodz Studioz. The duo comes with hard, dark boom-bap, deceptively minimal in its beats but filled with barrages of images and styles. Here, Spekt talks about where he’s been, the new album, and the importance of being original.

You and Karniege are joining together on the mike. What stands out to you as some of the most memorable collaborations in hip-hop?
One of the greatest collaborations was the group Smif n Wessun, with Tek and Steele. That album, The Shining, stands the test of time. We didn’t pattern our stuff after them, but it’s definitely a strong performance and one of the best albums as far as two artists coming together.

What makes for that chemistry?
You have to have your own distinct style, but it still has to be able to blend. You stand on your own and that other person stands on his own, like Red and Meth. That’s another one that you can relate closely to us. Method Man is wild with his style, Redman is wild with his style, but they both have different angles of attacking the mike and coming at it. It’s different techniques, but they blend really well together. With Karniege, we both have an abrasive style, but my terms of abrasiveness and his terms -- I might have the ill box cutter, but he’ll have the machete blade, or he may have the chainsaw and I have the nail gun.

What brought you two together?
We was in a room with Vast Aire, C Rayz Walz, Vordul, 4th Pyramid, and some other people, and out of that whole crowd me and him built on different shit that didn’t have nothing to do with hip-hop. We talked to each other about our wifeys, different stresses we was going through. First and foremost we had a relationship as friends, in a day and age when you can’t trust people. When we linked up, it wasn’t about the music. The music came into it later. But it transcends the music.

That natural feel is on the album. It also has a real aggressive tone to it. Is that something you’re conscious of?
I’m definitely conscious of it. It comes from the fact I feel like there’s so much garbage out there and what’s boiled up in me is the fact that I emerged from an era where you really had to represent yourself at a house party -- you had to be on the street corners to get into a session. Even a cipher you had to say something off top that would make every other MC pause. I wrote a rhyme recently and it says things are cool but I don’t write for y’all I write for other MCs. That’s the tone I take with everything I do.

I have a new project coming out called Guilty Party, and the beats are a lot jazzier, a Madlib-type feel, and the lyrics are effortless. This is just how I feel. But for Invizzibl Men, I try to go in anytime they put a mike in front of me like I have to get my message across. I’ve been in ciphers in Philly -- I’m from Philly originally -- I had to literally go in with 30 people and get to the middle to be heard. You can go back with me to that essence like Diamond D, KRS-One, Kool G Rap, Black Moon, Tribe, Ice-T, King Tee, and my favorite rapper, Ice Cube. You can be abrasive, but you still have to say something.

Do you rhyme for other MCs more than the average listener?
That was my worst period of my creating rhymes -- when I tried to rhyme for the listener. When I try to rhyme for me, or say something I’m gonna smile at, more people appreciate what I’m saying. I appreciate the listener, but I had to stop thinking about it. I had stop thinking about rap as a career and doing it for the money. I have a wifey, two cars, my own house. I get out the country twice a year without this hip-hop. When I go in it’s like, Let me do it with that hip-hop mind state, doing what I love. I started at school when I was 11 years old. I wanted to impress a chick who was like, "You can’t rhyme," and I had to go write a rhyme that night and come back. I go at it from that perspective, like from getting kicked out of school and being in an alleyway with cats that was smoking blunts and trying to battle each other. From the fun days, from like 1990, ’91, '92, '93, you hear the vibe that’s in the artist’s voice and even though it’s not intentional it’s a happy vibe. I could hear MC Lyte right now and just smile.

The album contains references to Sun Tzu and samurai, as well as to assassins and invisibility. How does any mystic thought figure into what you do?
As little kids, we used to play ninjas. I’ve read Samurai books, and I was born in ‘76 -- I was definitely a '70s/'80s baby. That’s where all those references come from. Back in the early '80s, there were all those ninja movies, and that’s still a really heavy influence in the writings. I just went to Asia in December, too, and I was trippin’ off that. It’s there. Invizzibl Men is the essence of being a ninja, the invisible warrior.

In your approach?
I just said a rhyme in Guilty Party: “We ninjas usin’ brute force.” Ninjas don’t use brute force. Ninjas are stealth warriors, but at the same time I might have the iron-fist gauntlet on and punch you in the grille with the spikes and after that disappear -- throw the smoke bomb and I’m gone. We still hit hard, but we tread very softly; you won’t even know we’re there. And we’re all seeing all knowing. When we wanna show you where we are, we’ll pop out and then disappear again.

I don’t intend to do a lot of interviews or none of that shit. I’m in such a space in my life where I do this strictly for fun. I’m good. I get a little per diem money, a few free flights, but this doesn’t make me. The big money to me is when I see somebody or someone hits me online and tells me, "When you said this, I lost it." Even when we discussed the song "Darkroom" earlier and you got into my world with that Dario Argento thing, for me that’s like getting paid for today.

What about the song “Hip Hop PSA”? It seems like a call to be different from the person next to you.
That’s my favorite song. That song was the embodiment of the whole album to me. If you could give someone one song to describe where we’re coming from, that’d be it. That’s letting people know I don’t care about these listeners, I don’t care about these new rappers. I’m still that kid from ‘92 with the Phillies Blunt T-shirt on, smoking Ls and freestyling all night for fun. Starting off at 8 p.m. and finish rhyming at 4 a.m. and not getting tired and still getting girls and checking my pager and having fly stuff on and getting away with a few different things but still having that carefree attitude. That song is a look back to make people look forward to say, "Yo, don’t forget about that era." I’m telling you who I am in that song. I am hip-hop. I am the result, and this is deep right here, 'cause every year back then there used to be a new style: like, "He’s rhyming four words together now as opposed to rhyming one line with another line," or, "Oh, shit, now everybody has a different voice when they rhyme," or "Oh, shit, Das Efx got people saying ‘iggity’ and this and that." You had to be original.

Nothing against none of these new rappers. I admit to being a hypocrite sometimes, but you’re not supposed to be going back dressing like the '80s shit, you’re supposed to dress on the next level. I come from a time when you can’t rhyme with the same voice you talk with. You can use your real name -- Keith Murray used his real name but he had one of the wildest styles. I don’t talk like I rhyme. I get into that persona and that’s what you get -- the raw. It’s still me, but I’ve got so many different facets to me to where its like you can’t pigeonhole me and be like, "He’s an underground rapper." I do things these underground rappers don’t do. I fuck with dime bitches, I drive a nice car, I wear fly clothes. But I’m not gonna rhyme about that, 'cause I’m living it.

10 Gritty Steps to healthy living...

So what are the top 10 steps you should take to improve your health?

The first step is knowing what we mean by healthy living. It's not just eating right and exercising. Learning to live healthy means trying to incorporate "health" into all aspects of your life from the most tangible, like wearing your seat belt to the intangible like staying centered through the power of "om."

Alright let's get healthy? Follow these steps and by next year, you will feel better than ever!

1. "Regular exercise. Exercise benefits every part of your life, from attitude to your cardiovascular system."

2. Eat a Healthy Diet. "Use common sense. Avoid fad diets. Eat plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables. Moderation is a key -- not just in eating, but also in all facets of a healthy life."

"Eat whole grain foods (bread, or rice, or pasta) at least four times per week. This will reduce the chance of having almost any cancer by 40%. Given that cancer gets about 1 in 3 of us in a lifetime, that's big advice."

"Eat at least five portions of vegetables and fruit a day, and especially tomatoes, red grapes and the like, as well as salad all year. This protects against a whole variety of different nasty things: It reduces the risk of stroke dramatically, it reduces the risk of diabetes considerably and it will reduce the risk of heart disease and cancer."

Drink at least 8 glasses of water each day. If you are not drinking water, you are not giving your body the resources it needs to stay healthy!

Enrich yourself consider taking a multi-vitamin. We don't always eat the proper foods and even if we do we are not always getting everything we need. B-vitamins, vitamin C, zinc, and magnesium are crucial nutrients needed by the body to maintain healthy functioning organ systems. When we are under increased stress, these vitamins and minerals help to promote endurance and maintain a healthy balance.

3. "Don't smoke. Just as exercise helps everything, smoking hurts everything."

4. "Drink in moderation -- if it all."

5. "Get a regular medical check-up at least once a year."

6. "Always wear seatbelts. Just make it a habit. Use car seats for kids."

7. Do something for other people. Helping others is a healing act for both you and them. A little volunteer work is a great way to keep a healthy perspective on yourself and life.

8. "Practice stress relief. Whether it's exercise, deep breathing, a hobby, church, meditation find something that helps you deal with the pressures of life and work." Consider the following suggestions:

"Smile and laugh. Spend some time watching a favorite movie or doing something you love. Laughter releases endorphins in the body which help us stay youthful."

"Communicate and share. Getting together with loved and sharing how you feel is physically and mentally rejuvenating. Feeling connected and listened to promotes a healthy centered state."

"Keep a Positive Mental Outlook. There's a definitive connection between living well and healthfully and having a cheerful outlook on life. Thought for the day: You can't be unhappy when you're smiling or singing."

Believe in yourself, listen to your voice inside. Honoring oneself and following your true passion leads to a healthy sense of self and wellbeing. Follow your path and don't let anyone tell you otherwise!

Say OMMMMMM....Om is not a word but rather an intonation like music. Saying "ommmmmmmm" sends a particular vibration through the body, which relaxes you...seriously, try it! When you are really stressed take a deep breathe and say Ommmmmmmmmmmmm!

Consider Meditation. What are the benefits well according to Dr. Oz several "things at once, at a hormonal level, studies have shown that meditation can counteract the fight-or-flight response that floods the body with the stress hormone cortisol and that also shuts down the parasympathetic system, which normally restores order after the alert is over. At a molecular level, meditation slows metabolism in red blood cells and suppresses the production of cytokines - proteins associated with the kind of heightened immune response often seen in stressed-out subjects such as students taking exams."

9. "Sleep on it. Get at least seven and a half hours of sleep every night. This is the only time our bodies have to regenerate and heal. If sleep is an issue, you can look into calming herbs such as valerian, hops, lemon balm and passionflower. A nice warm cup of chamomile tea before bed may also do the trick."

10. Remember to live in the moment! Life is ment for living not just completing tasks and running errands. The more you live in the moment the less stress and more joy you will get out of life.

So even if we fall short we need to get back up an live life with a abundance of Happiness, Health and Wealth!

Stay Well and Healthy,
The Gritty Committee

Kool Dj Red alert yeaaaaaaaaaaah 1987

I hate to stay in the past but, im all about learning about those before me.
found this in a dark corner of the net a must have...

And now for the moment you all have been waiting for. This weeks download comes
from the most influential dj in hip hop history...KOOL DJ RED ALERT. You may be
asking youself what does Red Alert have to do with mixtapes. Well in the 80's
you weren't in the loop if you didn't have a tape of Red Alerts show from 98.7
kiss fm. I'm originally from Springfield Mass, and everyone in Springfield has a
cousin from New York. Dubbed copies of Red's show would end up in Springfield
two days after the actual live airing.

What made Red's show so dope? Why was he so important to Hip Hop radio? Maybe
because he supported some of the biggest names in Hip Hop(BOOGIE DOWN
PRODUCTIONS,THE NATIVE TONGUES MOVEMENT,DJ MARK THE 45 KING,ULTRAMAGNETIC MC'S).
Or maybe because he had more flavor than a pack of now and laters. You couldn't
front on Red's personality, his drops were dope and he had custom made songs that
ended up becoming underground classics(BAIT//ULTRAMAGNETIC MC'S & THE TR 808 IS
COMING//BDP). All in all Red is to Hip Hop radio as Micheal Jordan is to
basketball. Argue with me if you want but no dj means more to hip hop radio the
KOOL DJ RED ALERT. Download now and thank me later Link

The singer voluntarily turned himself in to be questioned. He had not been arrested or charged over the incident at press time, according to an information officer, who declined to identify the injured party in the alleged assault.
According to Press, the LAPD said in a release that the 19-year-old R&B singer and an unidentified woman were in a vehicle in the Hancock Park neighborhood of Los Angeles early Sunday when they began arguing.

Happy Born Day J Dilla

Jay Dee/J Dilla Tribute Mix, Part 1

Remembering Big Pun

Was on Alllhiphop.com twitter page and to my surprised they had a ill Big Pun tribute. Had to snatch it up and rep for the BX

By Chuck “Jigsaw” Creekmur
When Big Pun died, it was a dark day in Hip-Hop. Frankly, it was probably darker than most fans realized. Pun was a member of an innovative and elite group of MC’s that reclaimed the art of lyricism. Influenced by Kool G Rap, he lead a renaissance with acts like Canibus, DMX, the Goodie Mob and connected with the acts of the early-to-mid 90’s. When he died, we lost a general in that movement.

Pun is consistently remembered for his rhymes, wit and swagger even nine years since his sudden death. Here is a collection of my favorite collaborations to recall one of the most exciting artists in Hip-Hop history. The list pairs Pun with a vast supporting cast that includes Black Thoughts, Fat Joe, Cuban Link and The Notorious B.I.G. The inventory isn’t meant to be perfect, because I’d like to swap favorites with other Pun fans. If you miss Big Pun, offer your favorite songs and collaborations from the big man.

Christopher Rios (November 9, 1971 - February 7, 2000)

“Twinz (Deep Cover '98)” - Big Pun Feat. Fat Joe

Every time I listen to this song, it’s like listening to it for the first time. It gave us one of the best one-liners ever. Pun says, “Dead in the middle of Little Italy, little did we know that we riddled two middle men who didn't do diddly.” Whoa. This remix stretched Dre and Snoop’s shoes. Period.

“Blow For Blow” – Big Pun and Cuban Link

Without question, this is my favorite Big Pun mixtape song. An amazing display of lyricism by both men - “Hit you with so many rights, you’re gonna beg for a left.” I quit.

“New York Giants” – Big Pun and M.O.P.
Unfortunately, a lot of people (fans and sideliners alike) wrote off Yeeeah Baby, Pun’s second CD. Not me. I loved that album, but realize it was impossible to top the classic Capital Punishment. “I bring death to your door like an escort from hell.”
“We Run New York” - Big L, Big Pun and Biggie Smalls
This song is special, because it aligns three rappers that have died on one boom bap track.“Super Lyrical” – Big Pun and Black Thought
At the time, Black Thought had yet to be properly recognized as somebody that could spit side by side with a harder edged rapper like Pun. The two met in the middle stylistically and the results are a wonder to the ear.

“John Blaze” - Big Pun, Fat Joe, Nas, Jadakiss and Raekwon
This is the remix of this song. On the original, Nas rhymed different lyrics. Rumor has it, Big Pun is the reason for that change.
“You Came Up” – Big Pun and Nore
This was a happy, Latin-flavored song. Not forced and effectively articulated Big Pun’s travels from the bottom to the top. “Latins going platinum was destined to come.” Yes indeed.

Finally – a classic interview with Big Pun, Canibus, DMX, Mos Def, Mic Geronimo, and John Forte.
