Saigon's displeasure with the direction hip hop has taken has been well documented. For many years, Saigon has battled with the idea to turn his back on the industry for good... but the genuine love of hip hop has made it hard for him to call it quits. Still, after so many years of pain and disappointment... he's holding out in hope for change, whilst actively working towards changing the game.

In this frank interview, Saigon speaks out against the current state of the game and tells Rawroots why "Greatest Story Never Told" may well be his last album.
YOU WONT WANNA MISS THIS ONE!

The new album “The Greatest Story Never Told” was released this year. What was the inspiration behind this album?
Just life in general. Being alive. Growing up in the ghetto and seeing all the problems in the black community that no other rapper talks about. If they do try to talk about it, they try and glorify it. They try to make it something cool, when it’s something very detrimental to our future. Just seeing what’s going on – society’s ills and putting it into song form.

Do you feel as though hip hop has an obligation to society?
Absolutely! One hundred percent. Hip hop has an obligation because that’s where hip hop was born out of. Hip hop was born through the struggle. Through black people, through black struggle. Now it’s like the same music that was born out of struggle is used to promote the struggle and glorify the ills of our community, when at one time it was a cry for help. Now it’s like hip hop went from a cry for help, to pretty much saying “Yeah, look. We sell crack to each other and we gang bang on each other and we in gangs and we do [all this]. It’s become so ignorant and that’s the reason why it’s at where it’s at right now. The only thing it does good is generate money and all money’s not good money.

As you said, there are many artists out there making money right now. Are there any of those [hip hop]artists you respect who are mainstream?
In hip hop, very few. I like different people for different reasons. You gotta respect somebody who’s comin’ into this game and say “Hey, I’m just comin’ into this to make money” – and they make money. You respect them on a certain aspect because that’s what they’re in it for. That don’t mean I agree with it but, anybody that sets out to do something and does it – you respect them to a certain level. But that’s as far as it goes. Other than that, it’s like ok, you makin’ money but look how many people you’re steppin’ on to make it. Look how many lives that you might trouble in order to make the monies. It’s a tricky situation. As far as creativity, I don’t even listen to hip hop. I can’t listen to it. It’s gotten extremely corny.

So you don’t listen to it at all?
Nah. I don’t listen to it at all. It’s wack!

So you do you still listen to music at all?
Yeah. I listen to music. I listen to jazz, old school r&b, I like old school hip hop because that’s where I found my inspiration, from old school hip hop. When you listen to artists that are still around today, they come from what I like to call “The TRUE School of Hip Hop”, because earlier on in their career, their music meant something. It meant something more than just saying “Hey! I got a fancy car and nice jewellery.” Look at all hip hop says nowadays – “I got a lot of girls, fancy cars and jewellery”, that’s about the extent of it. We owe more to our children.

Who did you come up listening to?
I came up listening to Big Daddy Kane, Public Enemy, LL Cool J, Nas, Jay Z – artists like that. Kool G Rap. Back then, when an artist was gonna exaggerate their lyrics, you knew it was fabricated. They didn’t try to make you believe it. These artists nowadays really want you to believe they’re drug King Pins and they’re drug lords. A real drug lord is not gonna go on a record and say “Hey! I’m a Drug Lord!” ‘cause that’s incriminating themselves. These kids the record companies market the music to, they believe this fabrication. It sad because it’s one thing when you’re a teenager, but these are 35 year old grown men *laughs*. Talkin’ about gangbanging. 34 men tryna promote gangbanging? You know gangbanging kills and it’s detrimental to your society. Have you ever been to a funeral where a 13 year old kid got shot in the head? Where his mother’s crying and everybody’s sad because he joined a gang or because some gangbangers who don’t know how to shoot are shooting at each other and some innocent kid gets killed? Then everybody wants to cry when a tragedy happens but most of the time it’s glorified. It don’t make sense.

It’s a shame that more artists don’t think like that. I know you are a father yourself so you have that awareness being a parent.
Yeah. And most of these guys are fathers. What makes it worse is that the artists that do portray these images, don’t really want no part of that lifestyle in real life. *laughs*. It’s not like they’re REALLY gangbanging because they’re not. That’s kind of like me portraying the role of a drug addict but I don’t do drugs, but I glorify the use of drugs – but I wont do it myself because I know the harm it causes but I try and advocate it. There’s a lot of artists that talk about weed but don’t smoke weed in real life. A lot of artists talk about drinking alcohol but don’t even really drink.

Do you think it’s the artists themselves pushing that idea or do you think that it’s the labels forcing them to market themselves that way?
It’s the label. I’m SURE it’s the label. I don’t like to speak names but I know a lot of these guys. A lot of these guys came up from the underground before everybody got their record deal. A lot them that got big, they didn’t have the same image before their record deal. The first thing a record company asks you is “What’s your image?”. They care more about your image than your music. They wanna market something. What works? Gangsters work. Drug dealers work. The weed thing works. So they’re gonna try and make you go down one of those roads. It’s the record companies. Absolutely. It’s a business. They just look at it from one aspect and that’s money. There’s a lot of greedy people in Corporate America. Corporate America is greed. Greed. Greed. America breeds greedy people. People want way more than they need and they’ll do anything to get it. Even if it means hurting somebody else. We’re an oversexed, over greedy, over violent society.

Your “Strange Noize” tour ended in April. How was that tour for you?
It was no good for me. It didn’t make sense for me to be on that tour at all.

Why didn’t it make sense for you to be on the tour?
Because it wasn’t my demographic. And for everybody to have been waiting for my album for so long and then you put me in front of kids who don’t know me or don’t even understand the kind of music I make... it didn’t make sense and I told everybody that. My agenda in music and the kind of music they are used to is two totally different things. You wouldn’t send and Tech N9ne fan to a Lupe Fiasco concert because they’re not gonna get what they’re expecting to get. You’re not gonna send an Insane Clown Posse fan or a Juggalo to a Roots show. It just doesn’t make sense. I understand getting new fans but you still wanna get your demographic first. You still wanna cater to the fans that you already have when you’re comin’ out with a new project rather than tryna get ALL new fans.

Are you gonna do another tour, but the RIGHT way?
Yeah. Not another “Strange Noize” tour though. No. I’d [organise] my own tour before I do that again. Probably go out with Immortal Technique or somebody who more fits with me. That kind of fan base.

You’re over here in London very soon. Are you looking forward to performing over here?
Absolutely. I love performing overseas. For some reason UK and London in particular have a different kind of respect for the art – more than Americans. America has become about money and that’s why there’s a new rapper popping up every day. Anybody feels like they can do it because all it takes is for one guy who’s half talented to come and get a hit record and come with a gimmick. Everybody goes “Hey, I can do that!.” There’s no respect for the artistry or for the skill. Everybody can’t join the NBA. It takes a certain level of skill to be able to do a sport but in hip hop all you need is a catchy jingle and you got a hit record.

You seem genuinely disheartened by the state of hip hop. Probably more than any other artist I’ve interviewed...
Yeah. Because it’s where I grew up and it shaped and moulded my life. I know that some kids are running around and hip hp is shaping and moulding their life and if all the imagery they see is negative imagery, it’s probably going to have a negative influence on them. There’s no positive influence in hip hop right now. None. The ones that try, don’t get any marketing dollars behind them. You gotta be about sex, drugs and violence to make it in this game. That sh*t is backwards.

Are there any artists out there you would like to work with? Not just the mainstream artists – any artists you’d like to collab with?
No. I don’t even have to think about it.

Any jazz artists or r&b artists?
There’s a lot of r&b artists. I would like to work with Lyfe Jennings when he gets out of jail. I would die to work with Lauryn Hill even Alicia Keys, I like a lot. But rap – NO WAY. I’ve worked with Jay Z already. I worked with Jay, I worked with Nas, I worked with Black Thought. If I never worked with another rapper again, I’d be ok.

What other projects are you working on?
I just signed this artist named Corbett. He’s a producer/songwriter/singer. We’re putting together his project. I’m helping him get the artists he likes on his project. Touring with this “Greatest Story Never Told” album, it would take a lot for me to ever do another album. I don’t even wanna do this no more to tell you the truth. I’m so fed up with it. I feel like I just wanna lash out and call people out. I don’t wanna be labelled as a hater or any of that but somebody gotta say something. Everybody’s quiet and complacent and content acting like they don’t see all the negative bs goin’ on. I’m not gonna tolerate it for much longer. If I’m gonna be in it, I gotta speak my mind, that’s just who I am. It’s like as soon as you speak your mind, they wanna ‘Blackball’ you. They don’t wanna play your records and you gotta kiss dj’s asses to get your records [played]. I’m not with all that. I’m not with that.

But you do have artists you will be pushing out there, like Corbett?
Yeah. He’s a producer more than an artist. I just want people to hear his music because I think he’s an extraordinary talent. He plays a lot. He doesn’t sample much. He’s a musician and he plays everything from keyboards to guitar. Drums. He’s a guy you can put in the studio by himself and he can make a great record with nobody there. Kind of reminds me a lil’ bit of a Ryan Leslie but he’s a white kid. He’s really talented. He produced some records on “Greatest Story Never Told” actually. He produced “Bring Me Down” with Just Blaze. He produced a record called “I Want It All”. He produced a lot of the records I’ve been doing lately.

We’ll definitely look out for him then.
Yeah. Check him out. I think he’s gonna be big. He loves the music. It’s not really about a dollar to him. It really more so about the love of music. You can hear it in the music. Authentic.

Well… I had gotten a couple g’s for a single (back when you could get dough like that for like 2-3 songs lol) but it was a hectic time in my life. Lot of hustling but I was supposed to do a whole album for Subverse. I actually was spending like days at a time wit Big Juss and Scienz of Life, just chilling and vibing and recording. I had met Doom in 99 and used to just build on the phone wit him a lot as well. He actaully told me when I get my budget he’d produce my whole shit for like $200 a beat. Shit was looking really, really good for the kid goin into 2001, when my single dropped. I felt like my album was gonna be an underground classic. Shit I even ran into El-P in Atlanta around the time and he was like “yeah I heard your single, I like it” so I was feeling real confident.

Then, the harsh label devil politics shit started in. I just started feeling a “vibe”, like somethin was “off”. I’m calling Subverse offices getting a run around like WTF is goin on? They invited me to do Rocksteady concert in 01 as well, so to kind of backhand them I rolled with my team, Broady Champs and we tore that shit DOWN!!! Like there’s footage of well known underground legends losing their shit at that show! But anyways, after we tore it down I wanted my whole team to get signed and communications just stopped between me and the label. I was offered like $8,000 for an album tho’ and declined it because I thought I was worth more and because it took so long to get that other couple g’s. I was selling weed and shit and surviving living wit some chick in her dorm room, lolz….Hard times. That showed me that that a label didnt really give a fuck about me.

I went in with my team Broady Champs: N.Y.C.E who is now Huey P Capone, Abnormal who is now Buddy Leezle, Point God and Scholar Golden. Everyone hailed from the East Coast but we all linked up in Atlanta in the late 90′s. These are the cats I would roll with outside of music, getting into trouble, lolz…..All talented and everyone in the crew had a different style. Also if we were all in the same spot expect chaos and intimidation. Ask some of your favorite artists……..there was some tension when Broady was around. So we just did local shows and recorded at my crib. All heartfelt hiphop. No label, no bullshit just me and my brothers getting busy. Them dudes are my heart to this day and Broady was like my college experience. We got so many chapters of music. Easily like 10 yrs worth. MF Grimm ended up hearing 1 of our tapes in 2004 and signed us to Day By Day and we dropped an album. Other than that, we did our own tapes and sold em on the street and at shows.

I dunno if I’ve been blessed or cursed but I’ve had like 6 deals and never dropped an album. All indie. I hate labels and politics. I like real interactions with real people. I don’t need to be a whore for a dollar or kiss ass. I do this shit from the heart g. I have my lil voice online or whatever, so I just been dropping shit thru School of Sharks, which is Broady and artists and writers and people I consider fam.

This here is rawness, unmixed and unmastered. Just a couple street kids with a mic. Fux it we got like a decade worth of music – may as well let people hear it, mixed or unmixed or whatever knawmean.

An album with Kno (fully mixed and mastered) should hopefully be dropping soon. An ep including never before heard Doom production and bangers from Lex Boogie and Willie Green also coming.
